In the United States, it’s not considered responsible to let your cat roam freely outdoors. When you get a cat from a shelter, a rescue group, or a breeder, they’ll ask you to promise that you keep the cat indoors only.
In the United Kingdom and some other countries, however, the shelters will often insist that the cat be allowed outdoors. Which is correct? Let’s look at the issues.
The reason the people in the United Kingdom and elsewhere allow their cats outdoors is that they know cats need environmental enrich-ment. However, we are perfectly capable of providing that environmen-tal enrichment indoors, and your cat will be much safer as well.
